Summer Movies To Look Forward To
It’s summertime! Well, except in Monterey, where summer doesn’t happen. Go figure I’m living in the part of California without bloody summer.
Anyways, what’s summertime without explosions! shiny colors! sequels! Drum-roll: Top 7 Movies To Look Forward To:
#1: The Dark Knight – July 18
Obviously #1. This movie looks sick. Christian Bale is the best Batman ever, and due to Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker it may be the most intense Batman EVER. Besides, who doesn’t love Maggie Gylenhaal? Once again, it looks like Chris Nolan is raising the bar on Hollywood blockbusters. You can’t watch the trailer and not chomp at the bit to see this. #2: Wall-E – June 27
I’m such a Pixar nerd. Besides being a huge fan of their work, I have a tremendous amount of respect for John Lasseter, Ed Catmull, and Co.: their unwavering commitment to storytelling and the creativity they employ to convey those stories. But I can wax on all day and then some about them, so just click here for the trailer for Wall-E.
#3: Sex & the City – May 31
Yay! The girls are back! There’s a lot of skepticism about this film – will it be as good as the TV shows? But I’m optimistic it’s going to be a solid movie. Not that my gut means anything, but it’s usually pretty good at predicting how good the movie is based on the trailer. Maybe I’m a little sentimental about NYC, but already the trailer tugs on my heart strings. Click here for the Sex & the City trailer.
#4: Prince Caspian – May 16
Walden Media doesn’t get a ton of press, but I think they tend to be underrated as a production company. Their adaptation of Bridge to Terabithia was just heart-breaking. So I’m hoping that this movie is in good hands. I could just be biased because I love the books that much though. Click here for the Prince Caspian trailer.
#5: Indy Jones 4 – May 22
The rumors are flying that this movie is going to suck, but never count out Spielberg. Besides, there’s no way it could be as bad as Temple of Doom. Click here for the Indy Jones 4 trailer.
#5: Speed Racer – May 9
Welcome back Wachowski Brothers. I didn’t see V for Vendetta, so I’m not sure if it was good or not but boy do they have a lot to make up for given how awful Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions were. But look at this movie! The shininess! The art direction! The color! Click here for the Speed Racer trailer.
#6: Get Smart – June 20
I think this could be pretty entertaining. I like Carrell and while she’s not a scene-stealer like Emily Blunt, Hathaway gets the job done. Click here for the Get Smart trailer.
#7: Pineapple Express – August 8
If you were a Freaks & Geeks fan, then the reunion of Seth Rogen and James Franco makes this movie super exciting. Yet another movie from the Apatow troupe, but hopefully it won’t be formulaic and patterned on the previous ones. On the surface, it looks like more of a buddy flick than a male rom com. Click here for the Pineapple Express trailer.
A Movie I’m Not Looking Forward to But Wish I were: The Mummy 4 – August 1
I loved the other three Mummy movies – good pulpy, cotton candy, action movie fun. But then I heard Rachel Weisz wasn’t reprising her role. Uh-oh. And Stephen Sommers isn’t working on this film, and Rob Cohen is. Big Uh-oh. Rob Cohen directed XXX. You gotta make your living sure, but dude…XXX. They also haven’t released a trailer for this movie yet and it’s already May. This is not a good sign of things to come.
I completely agree; I’m completely looking forward to The Dark Knight, though the reviews for Speed Racer were extremely disappointing.
Was Temple of Doom the one with that really annoying asian kid? Man, they should bring him back.
Haha, I can always count on my Mich to highlight a bit more of the bigger movies than my sister’ll post about. I’m reeeeeally excited for “The Dark Knight” and hope it comes to Japan…it’s so hard to tell which movies will come over fairly quickly and which ones won’t. I’m pretty sure “Prince Caspian” will, and I’m half-excited and half-worried about that. While “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” wasn’t bad, it also wasn’t as mind-blowing as LotR, you know? But Caspian looks gooood…I’m really hoping it won’t disappoint!
Yep. Temple of Doom had the annoying asian kid. Bring him back?! I hope you’re joshing.
I thought about whether I was more excited about the limited-release, smaller films or the larger ones. And it’s summer! It’s freaking big movie season time! Not that non-blockbuster films shouldn’t come out during this time, but ya know, enjoy the times right?
