Top 3 TV Shows to Look Forward to in ‘09
It’s great to use the time before TV shows return to catch up on TV shows (helllooo five seasons of the Wire), but here’s what I’m looking forward to returning in ‘09:
1) Lost: Season 5, returns Jan 21
Come on Cuse and Lindelof – it’s been a great Season 4, don’t fail us now.
2) Burn Notice, returns Jan 22
No other show on the air right now blends is as fun to watch as this one, making it my new favorite show. I was skeptical at first, but I burned through twenty-some episodes (Season 1 and half of Season 2) in several days because it was that good. You can’t say no to Bruce Campbell.
Fashion, AZN-style
The China Mobile Wireless Music Awards in Beijing are…AWESOME. Jezebel posted on this and called it “glam strangeness.” This is the quintessential “weird but I can’t look away because it’s like a train wreck that JUST might work” and oh, god love ‘em for it. For example, (a la Getty a la Jezebel), witness one Jay Chou:

Takes a brave man to wear a cardigan with UNICORNS and HEARTS on it. On second look, his hair is prettier and shinier than mine will ever be. How do you do it, Jay Chou?!
Can you imagine how crazy-awesome a Korean awards show would be like? On the crazy-awesome scale, it goes: Chinese fashion < Japanese fashion < Korean fashion.
Wolverine Trailer
A trailer for the upcoming Wolverine movie is now up on Yahoo!Movies, and luckily, it seems more promising than its crappy title “X-Men: Wolverine Origins.” The trailer looks, actually not horrific.
(Link to see it in large, HD quality.)
Let’s break it down, shall we?
Writers: David Benioff, Len Wein -Benioff wrote The Kite Runner (which I have never seen but hear is decent) but he also wrote Troy, whose story had the movement of molasses. The myth is rife with characters with contradictions, and conflicts all-around – you’d think it’d be interesting to watch. Benioff doesn’t seem like an awful sign (unless you really hated Troy) but doesn’t exactly inspire optimism.
Now Len Wein on the other hand, who is credited on IMDB as responsible for the “characters”, inspires tons of giddy, nostalgic-ridden hope. Remember the FOX cartoon series on Saturday mornings in the early 90s? He wrote episodes for Batman, X-men, and Spider-man. Even more awesome? He wrote an episode for Beast Wars: Transformers. Oh, those were good times. (more…)
Spaceships + Inside Out Apes + Virus –> Crazy Dream
“I had a dream where Keith and I went to see Choi for some reason. So like we get to his house, but Choi is an inside out ape. Like, he’s a walking muscular system except it’s clear that he’s an ape instead of a human.
Then he gets into the bathtub and starts telling me about how his immune system has little spaceships that shoot down invading viruses and stuff.
It was an awesome dream.”
Oh Shu, where does your mind come up with this crazy ass stuff?!
Japanese Bug Fights
I don’t think anyone will be amused by this post as much as Toro, Matt, and Shu:
Courtesy of Glark, Japanese bug fights. No you read those last three words right, alright. Can you imagine the bug fighting gambling? “I’ll take $5 on the scorpion over the tarantula because its stinger’s been looking real strong.”
The Field Guide to the Facial Expressions of Keanu Reeves
If there’s one link to click on today, THIS IS IT. Check out Vulture’s Field Guide to the Facial Expressions of Keanu Reeves. This really might rank as my all-time favorite Vulture piece. EVER.
In honor, here’s the Bill & Ted trailer:
Aw geez the trailer makes me hysterical. And I’m writing about bankruptcies today. Such is the power of Bill & Ted.
Surfing’s New Horizon
Some tidbits on surfing:
-Will be interesting to see how these young teen surfers will change the landscape.
-In the surfing documentary “Riding Giants,” my favorite section is the 2nd one – about Maverick’s, the enormous big wave spot off of Half Moon Bay between San Francisco and Santa Cruz, CA. It’s mind-boggling that people swim way out about half a mile, deal with rocks, waves that can go beyond 20′. On top top of that, there are SHARKS. Like the Bermuda Triangle of sharks out there.
Love the shots of the group of surfers paddling their hearts out to go over the wave just as the crest is about to break. Who’s going to make it over and who’s going to get sucked under? Dun-dun-dun!
