Day 1

Posted in Television by Michelle on February 25, 2009

Having a day off is great. Having a day off after you’ve seen the dentist and can’t do anything is starting to drive me crazy. And this is after 12 hours. I have no idea how I’m going to survive little to no activity over the next 3-5 days. And this is coming from someone who can sit for TV marathons for hours. Anyways, at least I caught up on some TV:

Shows That I Have Meant to Watch But Just Hadn’t/Marathon-ed through:

Battlestar Galactica: Definitely meets up to the hype. Although it hasn’t hit me as hard as Lost Season 1 and The Wire, halfway into the the first half of Season 2, I’m definitely addicted to the show and all of its gray moralities and plain-and-simple bad-assery.

The Hills: Yes, judge me. But hey, watch several eps and you become addicted too. I ran through Season 1 and Season 2 rather quickly,  and just finished Season 3. The problem is, I’m getting bored with the show. The cinematography is always gorgeous as usual, Lo is almost always funny, but I’m losing interest in these fabricated dramas. Still, I’ll watch Season 5 especially if Spencer finally gets what’s due to him. Why couldn’t they have made the show include more stuff like this:

Princeton Thinks UChicago Has it Worse

An amusing article comparing Princeton vs. UC. Not sure if our Chicago mindset makes us masochistic geniuses or just plain crazy people, but hey, at least we’re not wussies. Represent.

It’s been awhile

I’ve been terrible at updating this blog recently, but my little stint of oral surgery this morning may take care of that. Hopped up on painkillers, I may very well end up posting a gajillion pieces today. I’m also hungry but can’t eat anything yet,  and am woozy enough to not quite care too much about the hunger pains. Yet. Should be a good day, folks!

Sidebar: General anesthesia is the best invention of modern medicine bar none. You  may think Vicodin would be up there, but Vicodin makes some people throw up. General anesthesia, on the other hand, is always your friend.

Top Chef: Masters

Posted in Television by Michelle on February 11, 2009

The people at Magical Elves are spinning off Top Chef into Top Chef: Masters, where renowned chefs compete against each other for the title “Top Chef Master” and money for a charity of choice.

The cooking is expected to be fantastic, but will they make good TV? Can they match catchphrases like Dave’s “I”m not your bitch, bitch!” or Andrew’s “I have a culinary boner.”? The adorable wackniness of Carla, and the craziness that was Malarkey?

The host and judges have been announced – Kelly Choi will host, and these are the judges.

Important Things with Demetri Martin

Really excited about this show, which premieres tonight. Martin was one of my faves back in the day when he was on the Daily Show.

Can’t Get Out of My Head: Mika

Posted in Music by Michelle on February 6, 2009

I woke up to a rainy day, which is good for the drought and you know, keeping California from going up in flames this summer.

These are the kinds of days where you need a little Mika in your life to provide a little pick-me-up. But instead of “Relax, Take it Easy” or “Love Today”, it’s “Happy Ending” I can’t get out of my head.

The melody and the musicality are so feel-good you almost forget just how bittersweet the lyrics are. (The song also makes me think of “Seasons of Love” from Rent)

Kristen Bell on Jimmy Kimmel

Tommy Wiseau of “The Room” should send Kristen Bell a really nice gift basket.
